Above can be seen the new design, commissioned by the Ministry of Justice, a branch of H.M.Government, for use on all the new Law Court buildings across the United Kingdom. We understand that, unlike the previous design (original drawn 1952, depicted in red below), which started life, and was only really ever meant to be used on a small scale, this version was specifically made to work at sizes from half a metre high up to a metre and a half high.
As the previous drawing was only approx. 6"x4" in its original state, but still managed to be reproduced at large scale as a cast metal sign on court buildings, it is quite easy to believe that the new design would stand larger reproduction. Reduction of the new drawing to fit on screen has reduced line thickness considerably, although a good idea of the vigour of the design can be seen in its depiction here. When rendered sandblasted into stone or brick, engraved on glass or cast as the previous design in stainless steel, the impact should indeed be impressive.
At a time when more and more institutions permitted the use of arms are opting for trendy logos, it is refreshing to see a strong, new interpretation of an all too familiar symbol.
